MMP dihelat setiap hari minggu selama bulan Juni hingga September.

Great experience and teamwork with ALZI Nederland

We have been processing and collaborating together for 3 months in the Melody Memory Project which is a form of collaboration between SV UGM, Stichting Alzheimer Indonesia Nederland, and the Minomartani Cultural Center. The MMP program is implemented with the aim of promoting quality of life to anticipate Alzheimer’s by uniting health and the arts, in this case playing gamelan. Technically, MMP is organized by the Student Project-based Learning (PBL) Team under the Center for Excellence in Culture and Tourism (CoE CT) UGM SV with all members being students from the Department of Language, Arts and Cultural Management (DBSMB).

This event was held at the Minomartani Cultural Center with the target of the elderly who are members of the Metri Budaya musical group. MMP is held every Sunday from June to September. In the implementation, Fauzia Erbin Pebriarina as the coordinator along with other members worked in a team to prepare different events every week. We came as early as possible to prepare the room, opened all the windows to ensure the air circulation, and prepared the gamelan instruments to be ready for use when the Metri Budaya group arrived. Not to mention when to schedule checks and distribution of vitamins, we have to contact various parties such as representatives from the Metri Budaya Group, puskesmas officers to monitor their health. However, as an overseas student I like this part the most, because students also get their turn to do health checks and most importantly, it’s FREE!

After we opened the event and the Karawitan Group started playing gendhing, we began to prepare for the next agenda, break time which was followed by Brain Gym. We distributed snacks and mineral water to all elderly members of the Metri Budaya Group. What’s interesting here is that the elderly are trained to always carry their respective snack boxes and drinking bottles that have been distributed since the first day of starting the program. In addition to reducing plastic waste, this can train the memory of the elderly with the habit of doing small things in their environment.

To make the event livelier, we played educational videos about the elderly, entertainment, and games together. At the end of the event we always close by doing Brain Gym together. We started lining up in the front row to guide the movement. The elderly can also see a video of the movement through the projector we have prepared. Laughter was unavoidable when we realized that some of the elderly were struggling to keep up with the rapidly accelerating movements of the Brain Gym. All participants followed the movement with enthusiasm and enthusiasm.

“This MPP provides a very valuable experience because we can directly serve the community, especially the elderly. So be more aware with elderly families too. Although tired and dizzy, it was worth it!” Diva said, a member of PBL in the field of consumption and logistics. “It’s also nice to be able to learn with friends, add relationships, experience, and understand other people’s characters.” Added Dina, a member of the PBL for events.

It was raining when we bought logistics, it was too hot here and there to buy things that we couldn’t get, until we almost stayed at the Minomartani Cultural Center because we even had to prepare for live streaming. However, after seeing the enthusiasm and participation of the elderly in participating in this event, it made us even more excited to plan events for the following weeks. This activity made us aware that there are people who need more attention around us, namely the elderly with possible Alzheimer’s and Dementia diseases that they may suffer from. Because when the time comes, we will all experience that phase, aging.

I and all of us believe that what we have done will certainly provide benefits for us personally, academically, and hopefully for the community, especially the elderly. This project teaches the meaning of how to work with a team that has various characters and diverse activities, how to communicate with parents, and how-to do-good problem solving.

Thank you ALZI Ned for the wonderful lessons, we will never forget this collaborative experience.
